Description

This image includes objects listed in a number of well known astronomical catalogues including Barnard's;  Sharpless; Messier; Lynd's and the New General Catalogue (NGC). Prominent in the centre of the image are the two dark nebulae Barnard 92 and 93 (a.k.a. LDN 323 and 327). These dark nebulae make for a nice contrasting feature against the backdrop of the busy starfield and pinkish glow that comes from the surrounding HII gas. Dark nebulae are dense clouds of dust that obscure the light from stars and objects behind creating the appearance of dark holes in space. The entire field captured in this image is encompassed in a large HII region catalogued as LBN 51 (Lynd's Bright Nebula) and Sharpless 2-41. According to the Sharpless Catalogue, SH2-41 is 3.5d x 2d which more than covers the field of view that we have here. The objects in this image are located in the constellation of Sagittarius along the plane of the Milky Way and include the "Small Sagittarius Star Cloud (Messier 24)  which can be seen as the dense grouping of stars at the bottom of the image. The mouse overlay presents an annotated view showing the catalogued objects as identified by the Pixinsight render process.
